A big, light, moist cake, with a very unusual method, and more unusual filling. The fudge topping is tricky to make - use white caster sugar, not golden (doesn't work). The 1973 version in the link is MUCH easier, but will need another couple of goes to perfect the spreading consistency. For those with a very sweet tooth.
This recipe was found in a recipe box purchased at Pop Vintage in Clermont FL. It's a copy of a what is indeed a very famous cake from a very famous classic American cookbook first published in 1959. Now trying to source some copies of that and the later versions and recipe compilations for The Old Home Store. A blog from 'The Iowa Housewife' has a page dedicated to her personal copies which says it all!
